This series of colorful, surrealistic digital prints comes from time spent exploring around Surfside Beach, Texas. About twelve years ago, my husband built a beach house so he could surf and not have to drive back to Houston after surfing all day. I had time to explore, drive the backroads and enjoy some solitude. Artists need time to wander, stop, and take photos. Not always easy unless you are alone!
Uninterrupted by the visual clutter of the city, I notice all the unique features of the area. Complex chemical refineries, colorful beach houses, wetlands, marshes, birds, alligators, cargo ships coming into port, sunrise and sunset, all this and more is my subject. Over the years, through all seasons, I escape to the coast to drive around and take photos.
I work and rework these photos with Photoshop and Procreate. Layering and combining images allows me to emphasize the mysterious and diverse. I use saturated color to express optimism, curiosity and appreciation for my life in the Gulf Coast region of Texas.
